Fishing is more than just a past time in South Walton – it’s a way of life! Local fishing guides are packed to the gills with business - and of course fish! Going out on a boat with a pro is always fun and rewarding, but if you want to go fishing on a whim, here's our latest SoWal List with some sweet spots around town locals and visitors can easily go to catch fish in South Walton
It's that time of the year when I have no time for anything but fishin'!
The weather is great, the fish are biting and there are lots of folks that want to go on the water. I am up at 3:30, on the beach at 5, finishing up around 7 and in bed by 8:30.
It's been a while since I wrote a report but this is still gonna be kinda thin on words... I have been running the "other" boat with the federal permit so I can fish my folks past the 9 fence when the fish decide that's where we need to be.
Red Snappers opened up this past weekend for a steady six-week run, after only being open on weekends (state waters) for the first part of May. We have had some spectacular catches but the Snappers are not as thick up in close as usual for this time of year.
It’s time for big fish, big prizes and family fun on the Emerald Coast of Florida! Recognized as one of the elite big-game fishing tournaments in the world, the 2016 Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic is set to get underway June 22-26 at the beautiful Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in the Florida Panhandle.
May 7th was the opening day of Red snapper season in Florida state waters and that has given us yet another species to be able to target again. Open only on weekends till the 28th but it sure is nice to get to change up my fishing styles from day to day.
The Kings have come back, still plenty of Vermillions around, Triggers, LOTS of short Amberjacks with just a few keepers mixed in, Cobia still showing up pretty regular and we found some Tuna and Mahi this past week too.
Fishing is coming back around towards the summer season with more and more species showing up in close to shore. As I said in my last report, the arrival of the big bait schools up in close is quickly followed by the pelagic predators.
We have been seeing Kings around just about every day as well as bigger Spanish, Bonita, even a few Black Snappers on the close in spots. The sharks have showed up thick as well. If you hook a good fish and don't get it in quick there as a good chance you won't get it in at all.
The weather has still been back forth a bunch with the prognosticators wrong about as often as right. The other morning had a small craft advisory and it was the prettiest day we've had in weeks. I've had to cancel a few days when the forecast was for "nice" as well.. oh well, as Mark Twain said, "everybody talks about the weather but no one ever seems to do anything about it".

Been a wet and windy Spring this year at the beach so far. Plenty of Fish to catch when we get a pretty day but there have been a shortage of those the past couple weeks. On the bright side, the Cobia are here!
